The site provides maps, texts, manuscripts, and prints that document stories of Spanish explorers and the impact of Spanish culture on the U.S. Visitors can see a letter written by Columbus describing the people and places he discovered and prints of Spanish historical structures from parts of the U.S. once under Spanish dominion. Although no one knows precisely which Spaniard first saw the Gulf of California, one of the first explorers of the gulf was Hernando de Alarcón. In 1540 Alarcón sailed some 200 leagues up the Colorado River trying to reach Coronado's expedition. |
