On March 18, 1864, General William Tecumseh Sherman was ordered by General Grant "to move against Johnston's army, to break it up, and to get into the interior of the enemy's country as far as you can, inflicting all the damage you can against their war resources." Sherman, with more than one hundred thousand men, immediately began preparations for what became known as the Atlanta Campaign. |
