is the first major exhibition of Kirchner's work to be shown in the U.S. in 30 years. Kirchner (1880-1938) was among the most prolific and creative of the German expressionists. He was the leader of Die Brücke (The Bridge), a group of architecture students turned painters who were opposed to the academic art that surrounded them. Available online are 12 of the more than 140 paintings, watercolors, drawings, prints, and sculptures on display at the exhibit. (National Gallery of Art)
